Carrier of Evocation

Zhaoci Wang

This performance art piece merges Buddhist religious rituals with contemporary artistic expression, drawing upon the profound concept of reincarnation to explore themes of life, death, and transcendence. Through the lens of anti-war activism, the work seeks to memorialize and elevate the lives lost to conflict, prompting reflection on humanity’s paradoxical relationship with nature.

We are born of the natural world, yet our relentless innovation in weaponry has led to its destruction. This piece challenges viewers to confront this contradiction, weaving together spiritual ritual and artistic protest to mourn, awaken, and ultimately transcend the cycles of violence. By fusing Buddhist philosophy with performance art’s disruptive power, the work invites a deeper contemplation of war’s toll and the urgent need for peace.

  • Hi, I am Jao Wang, a screen actor, a stage actor and an independent performance artist in third year Drama and Theatre Arts. My practice centres on ritualistic performance, where I explore the intersections of art, culture, and spirituality. Rooted in Eastern traditions, my work integrates religious elements to construct immersive ritual performances, transforming the stage into a space of contemplation and transcendence.

Through these ritualistic acts, I seek to convey profound themes of “nature”, “peace”, “humanity”, “survival”, and “death”, which invite audiences to engage with these universal questions on a visceral level. My performances are not merely spectacles but meditations, blending artistic expression with cultural heritage to challenge perceptions and awaken deeper awareness. Each act is a ceremony, a call to reflection, and a bridge between the sacred and the contemporary.
